CA6NM stainless steel is an excellent material for investment casting, particularly for components requiring high strength, good toughness, and superior resistance to corrosion and cavitation erosion
CA6NM is a low-carbon, soft Martensitic Stainless Steel casting grade, primarily standardized under ASTM A743/A743M. It is essentially a modified 13% chromium steel (similar to CA15/AISI 410) with additions of Nickel (Ni) and Molybdenum (Mo), and a controlled low carbon contentComponentRange (ASTM A743/A743M)Purpose of AlloyingChromium (Cr)11.5% - 14.0%Provides primary corrosion resistance.Nickel (Ni)3.5% - 4.5%Improves toughness, ductility, and weldability.Molybdenum (Mo)0.4% - 1.0%Enhances corrosion resistance (especially pitting) and strength.Carbon (C)$\le 0.06\%$Kept low to enhance weldability and toughness.

· Hydraulic Power Generation: It is the most common metallic alloy for hydro-turbine components like runners, blades, wicket gates, and diffusers, due to its resistance to cavitation damage caused by collapsing vapor bubbles in flowing water.
· Oil & Gas / Marine: Pump casings, impellers, and valve bodies exposed to seawater and moderate acidic conditions.
· General Engineering: Components requiring a balance of strength, impact resistance, and corrosion properties.
The material's specific composition and resulting microstructure (tempered martensite) provide a unique blend of performance characteristics, making it highly advantageous for critical applications:7
1. Excellent Cavitation and Erosion Resistance: This is its most significant advantage, crucial for hydro-turbine applications where high-velocity water can severely damage less robust materials.
2. High Strength and Toughness: It delivers superior tensile and yield strength, combined with good ductility and impact toughness, even at sub-zero temperatures (down to 8$-73^\circ \text{C}$ / 9$-100^\circ \text{F}$ under ASTM A352).10
3. Good Corrosion Resistance: It offers good resistance to fresh water, seawater, and general corrosion, surpassing standard 13% Cr martensitic steels like CA15 due to the nickel and molybdenum content.11
4. Improved Weldability: The low carbon and high nickel content make it significantly more weldable than standard martensitic stainless steels, which is vital for the manufacture and repair of large components like turbine runners.
